The Friends of the Berkeley County Library, Inc. is a 501(c)3 organization. Their purpose is to promote, enhance and support the Berkeley County Library System.

The Friends raise money through membership, corporation incentives, Friends' book tables/shelves at the libraries and semi-annual booksales.

The Daniel Island Friends of the Library has an annual fundraiser each October for the Daniel Island branch of the library, Harvest Tour of Homes.

The Friends' work continually highlights the library system as a cornerstone of the county and individual communities, providing opportunities for all to engage in the joy of life-long learning and connecting the thoughts and ideas of others from ages past to present.

The Friends of the Library founded the One Book Berkeley, now Berkeley Reads, Community Reads program and fund it. The 5th annual Berkeley Reads theme will be announced later this year.

Recurring programs funded by the Friends:

  • Summer Reading prizes and incentives for the Adult, Youth and Children's Summer Reading programs

  • T-shirts (more than 2,000) for children who complete the Summer Reading requirement

  • Monthly Teen Anime Clubs and national,  annually occurring Teen library events

  • Library promotional materials for offsite events, library card drives, etc.

  • Adult Book Discussion kits for the Goose Creek and Moncks Corner libraries' groups.

  • Adult Programming

Each year the Friends fund Special Requests. These requests are made by the Library Director after conferring with staff and determining what the library will and will not be able to fund from its state and local budget.

This year's Friends-funded special requests:

  • Booktrucks for Moncks Corner, Goose Creek, Daniel Island and Sangaree

  • Lateral file for Sangaree

  • Meeting Room chairs for Sangaree

  • Heavy-duty file cabinets for St. Stephen and Sangaree

  • Training line item for professional development

  • $2,500 for the purchase of audiobooks

  • Program support for the Berkeley County Oral History Project

  • Contribution to American Public Library Association to share the cost of hiring a public library lobbyist.
